Oh, Love, You Needful Thing

By: Theresa Flores

Oh, love, you live like a king,
You make your throne in the hearts of men,
And make us do such foolish things,
See, the confusion you bring.

Command you, and without dread we trod,
The land of our enemies; thinking the unthinkable,
Our minds make you its lord
Oh, you make fools of us all.

And love, your highness, if not pleased,
Will drive your constituents mad,
If you would not see them dead, at least,
You will leave them lost and sad.

But although demanding as you are,
Doubtless, cruel to this race,
With you I dare not to make war,
But at your feet, I too, seek my place.

For through the years that I have lived,
This I’ve proven to be true:
That though it seems a scourging ‘neath your sleeves,
Men just can’t live without you.
